The New SLA Forum

Guys, girls....

.. I am pleased to welcome you to the new South Leeds Archers Forum at:

http://www.southleedsarchers.org.uk/forum/index.php

A link is also available from the club web-site:
http://www.southleedsarchers.org.uk/

All members are very welcome to register...

Please now use the forum pages for chat instead of the Ten-Ring.

I will keep the ten ring going in case we can think of some other use for it.. (it's really more of a bloggy set-up isn't it).

One other thing, please spread the word as I can't reasonably be expected to get round everyone with this news all by myself. the more members we have using the site the better it will be for us all.

Any problems registering please give me a shout.

cheers
ewen

Hello

IntroductionsPosted by Alex Wed, January 14, 2009 12:00:56
Hello there smiley
Most of you won't know me but I was one of the early members of South Leeds Archers all those years ago and remained so until recently.

I am also proof that South Leeds is indeed a friendly and easy going club - I'm not even a member at the moment and I've been invited to take part in the forum!
(I even stayed with South Leeds despite the distance to travel when I moved to that far away land, North Yorkshire.)
Oh, and I am most definitely a longbow person - no offence to the techies. smiley

Just wanted to say a big HELLO to everybody and congrats to Ewen for the fantastic job done on the website!

I probably won't have much time to post in the next few months, I'm afraid, but I'll be keeping an eye on you whenever I can.

Have fun shooting!
Alex

IDEA: Knockout Challenge

CompetitionsPosted by ewen Wed, January 14, 2009 11:09:17
Ten simple rules...

1. Every competitor starts with 10 points.
2. The challenger may challenge any other competitor to a short head to head shoot-out.
3. The challenger specifies the number of points wagered for the challenge.
4. The challenged archer can accept the challenge and play for the specified points
or refuse the challenge and forfeit 1 point to the challenger.
5. The number of arrows shall be 9, shot in three ends of three arrows.
-Either 60cm or 40cm target face can be used.
6. The winner adds the wagered points to his total.
7. The loser reduces his points total by the number of wagered points.
8. When you get to zero points you are out of the competition.
9. Handicaps may be applied (I'm open to opinions whether they are an uneccesary complication).
-I suggest the following for simplicity-sake:
If you typically score xx points for an end of three arrows at the 60cm face:
Score Handicap
30-28 = 0;
27-25 = 3;
24-22 = 6;
21-19 = 9;
18-16 = 12;
15-13 = 15;
12-10 = 18;
9-7 = 21;
6-4 = 24;
3-0 = 27;
.. add your handicap to each end as you score.
10. Anything not covered by the existing rules shall be settled in accordance with the spirit of fair-play to all.

If you are interested, post a comment and tell us what you think your handicap should be.

Competition isn't a dirty Word

CompetitionsPosted by ewen Wed, January 14, 2009 11:07:23
Traditionally at SLA we've not had a tremendous programme of club competition, however, after the super competition Gerry organised just before Christmas I am wondering if there is an interest for more of this kind of thing?

Who would be up for a few more club competitions?
If so, what format would you like to see?
.. all suggestions and comments welcome

If you have any proposals, please start a thread to discuss them and let's se if there are any takers for it.

I will post something shortly to get us all going

Help with web-site

NewsPosted by ewen Wed, January 14, 2009 09:05:54
I'm currently having a look at the club web-site so your ideas and comments are important.

If you have any thoughts on what could be included in the main club site or for ten-ring then please let me know.

If you have any pictures that you'd be willing for us to use to adorn the site then please let me have them.

If you are a budding web-guru then let me know, I'm just playing about with this so the learning curve is steep.

In particular I am looking for volunteers to write a short passage on any of the following topics:

1. Field Archery
2. Target Archery
3. Other bow types (ie not recuve, longbow, compund)
4.My experiences at the club... ie a potted history from beginner course to present date.. How you found the club, your experiences on the beginner course and beyond.
5. Anything else you fancy?

FYI: I plan to introduce a few upgrades on a rolling basis. In the background I am working on a separate members only area where you will be able to log-in and view club records, classifications/handicap and (if there is enough interest) competition/diary info.

thanks in advance
ewen

inagural message on ten ring

IntroductionsPosted by Andy Fri, January 02, 2009 19:14:56

Hi All,

Only been shooting for just short of two years. Started with my son Harry, who I'm sure most of you know as that irritating kid with the Bowman badge! Only kidding, as I'm very proud of him, despite him continually beating me!

Ewen was (and still is!) our coach and we are totally hooked on archery- must admit to preferring the outdoor variety though and can't wait to get out there on the rugby field.

Loving it...

Andy

Hello from Michael

IntroductionsPosted by Michael Thu, January 01, 2009 11:11:02

Hi, I started with Archery in about 1958 !!! as there were only longbows in those days, and mine was 17lbs pull with home made arrows made from wood from a joiners shop. You could reach 50yds with a tail wind, but if head wind it was 30yds.

I joined Batley Archers and walked from Dewsbury to shoot, which was about 3 miles, my dad bought me a proper long bow for my 16th birthday, it was fantastic, first full draw, it broke in two????. all over the kitchin floor, not a good start.

I was a member for about 4 years but it eventualy closed for one reason or another,

I didn`t see a bow for 46 years till I finished working at 60. I was watching the Archery at the Olimpics on television, and thought I would like to have a go at this again, and went up to the Rugby club grounds. and was made me very welcome.

As Gerry states we are all enjoying the shooting and having a good time, we are all here to help which is good

Michael

and hello from me

IntroductionsPosted by Gerry Wed, December 31, 2008 22:33:29

I've been shooting for about 20 years now and - like Ewen - my shooting seems to have stood still (or gone backwards?) although I am getting far more enjoyment from my participation. Having said that I am not too concerned about my scores, the friendship and encouragement of others is far more important to me now.

In 1999 my wife and I started South Leeds Archers with our son and one of his friends because we had been travelling miles to a club and thought that we could do with a local place to shoot. We had also come across experienced archers who thought that beginners were not good enough to shoot on the same target - in South Leeds if you are good enough to pay your membership then you are good enough to shoot with!

I am really chuffed that we have such a large friendly club and really proud of the way many so members responded to help out with our latest, huge, beginners' course.

Please introduce yourself to other club members, one problem with growing so big is that we recognize faces but can't always put a name to them. If you shoot on the same target every week, with the same group of archers, have a change and shoot with some of the others - they need a good laugh!

I hope that you have a good 2009

and remember

a white is better than a miss (especially when I am shooting with the longbow)

Gerry
